This guide is for founders and tech or marketing heads of new forex brokers, introducing brokers, prop firms and trading-signal businesses who need a website and client portal that work with MetaTrader 4 or MetaTrader 5. After reading it you should be able to choose an integration route, decide between MT4 and MT5 for a new launch, list what the trader's room must show, and ask a developer the right questions before signing.
MT4 MT5 website development is the layer around the trading platform: the marketing site, the logged-in portal, the admin back office and the connections between them and the MetaTrader server. It is not the platform itself. For the wider broker-site picture, including SEO and content, see our forex broker website development guide at /solutions/forex-broker-website-development.

What MT4 and MT5 website development actually means
MetaQuotes makes the MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5 trading servers and terminals. Your broker or provider runs a server, and traders place orders in the desktop, mobile or web terminal. The website, the trader's room and the back office are a separate software build that talks to that server. This is what a web developer delivers.
Several things are not part of that build: the MT4 or MT5 licence, the server hosting, the bridge and liquidity provider, and any regulatory permission. Those are commercial and legal arrangements you make with MetaQuotes, a white label provider or your liquidity partner. Brandzivio builds the website and portal software only, not the MetaTrader platform.
Typical buyers are new brokers, IB (introducing broker) networks, prop firms, and signal or copy-trading businesses that need clients to log in, see their accounts and request deposits or withdrawals without calling support.
How does a website connect to MT4 or MT5?
There are three common routes. Route 1 is to embed the MetaTrader WebTerminal as an iframe embed on a page. Since MetaQuotes rewrote the MT5 web terminal in 2022, it runs on each broker's own access server, so an embed is tied to a specific broker's platform, usually needs HTTPS, and the host website cannot read the trader's login data. It lets visitors trade or try a demo account, but it does not give you account data for your own portal.
Route 2 is a hosted JSON/REST wrapper that a third-party vendor puts around the Manager API. It is quicker to start and usually carries a monthly fee, which also means you depend on the vendor's uptime and terms.
Route 3 is a custom bridge or middleware built on the Manager API (and, where your provider offers it, the Web API). The plugin side is commonly written in C++ or .NET, and your web application calls it from a secure server. It gives full control, but it needs more engineering and testing.
In every route, data flows both ways: the website creates accounts, runs balance operations, changes groups and resets passwords, and reads open trades, history and balances back. Many teams also keep a mirror database so that reports and dashboards do not load the live trading server. The Manager API is licensed and permissioned by MetaQuotes or the server provider, so check the current terms before committing to a route.
Which integration route fits you?
No route is best for everyone. Use the table as a starting point, then confirm with your server provider what access they actually grant.
| Route | Best for | Effort | Control | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| WebTerminal embed | Letting visitors trade or open a demo account from your site | Low | Low | Gives no account data for your portal; tied to the broker's platform |
| Vendor JSON/REST API | Faster launch when you do not want to build the connector | Medium | Medium | Monthly fee and dependence on the vendor's terms and uptime |
| Custom Manager API bridge | Brokers needing custom rules, IB logic or deep back-office links | High | High | More engineering, testing and long-term maintenance |
| White label provider portal | Testing a market with minimal build | Low | Low | Usually runs under the provider's licence and branding limits |
MT4 or MT5 for a new launch?
MetaTrader 4 was released in 2005 and MetaTrader 5 in 2010. MT4 supports hedging only, while MT5 supports both hedging and netting. The languages are also different: MQL4 and MQL5 are not compatible, so an MT4 integration is not copy-paste for MT5. If you plan to support both, plan and budget them separately. One source cites a limit of 1,024 symbols on MT4; treat that as a figure to verify with your provider. MT5 handles more asset classes.
A Brokeree analysis of over 900 brokerages found about 68% offer MT5, 40% offer MT4 and about 23% support both (Brokeree, 2025-26).
Sources disagree on whether MetaQuotes still licenses MT4 to new brokers. Reports since 2018 (BabyPips) say it stopped selling MT4 licences to new customers, which makes MT5 the practical option. Confirm the current position directly with MetaQuotes or your provider before you plan around MT4. If you already run MT4, it is in maintenance mode, so migration to MT5 is a planning question rather than an emergency.
What the trader's room must show from MT4/MT5
The trader's room is the logged-in area where clients see their MetaTrader accounts. A useful minimum is below.
- Dashboard with balance, equity, open positions, trade history and several accounts under one login.
- Onboarding with document upload and KYC and AML status, then deposits and withdrawals through a PSP (payment service provider) with real-time status, internal transfers and leverage requests.
- IB and partner area with referral links, client lists, commission tracking and multi-level structures.
- Admin side that maps a user's email to their MT account number, approves withdrawals and syncs with your CRM.
- A demo account option and a WebTerminal link for visitors who are not yet clients.
- Mobile-first layouts and light pages, because many users in India and elsewhere arrive on phones.
Security and reliability: the part that goes wrong
A portal that can change balances is a high-value target. Plan these controls from the start:
- Keep Manager-level credentials on the server, never in the browser, and restrict access with an IP allowlist.
- Use two-factor login, session timeouts, role-based admin access and audit logs for every balance operation.
- Make deposit and withdrawal handling idempotent so a retry cannot credit twice, and reconcile against the payment provider.
- Decide what users see when the MetaTrader server is down or data is delayed, and handle sync errors visibly.
- Add rate limiting, DDoS protection and backups, and test everything on a demo server first.
- If you handle personal data of people in India, the DPDP Act 2023 applies; verify the details with a lawyer.
Cost, timeline and what drives them
Cost depends on the integration route, the number of portal modules, payment integrations, the KYC provider, and whether you support MT4, MT5 or both. Build cost is also separate from platform cost.
For market context, vendor blogs such as B2Broker's estimate roughly $100,000 for a full MT4 licence, with larger sums for MT5 including setup, while white label is cheaper but typically trades under the provider's licence. These are vendor estimates, not independent figures. A vendor (Kenmore Design) also claims Manager API integration can be over half the effort in a brokerage app project; treat that as a vendor view too.
Brandzivio's published range for trading app development is Rs 3,00,000 - Rs 15,00,000 over 8 - 20 weeks. That is the trading-app service range and a starting point for scoping, not a quote for a MetaTrader portal; your actual figure depends on the factors above. India and compliance: what the client must sort out first
Brandzivio builds software only. You are responsible for all licences, registrations and compliance. The following is general information, not legal advice.
Offering retail forex to Indian residents is tightly restricted under RBI and FEMA rules, and currency derivatives for residents are generally limited to recognised Indian exchanges. Speak to a lawyer who specialises in SEBI and RBI matters before you plan an Indian-facing launch. Many broker sites target clients outside India under foreign regulators, and in that case the foreign regulator's rules apply.
Never promise returns or guaranteed profits on the site, and show risk warnings prominently. KYC and AML processes and payment gateway approvals are also your responsibility.
Checklist: questions to ask before you hire a developer
- Do they have a sandbox or demo MetaTrader server to test against, and who provides API access?
- Which route are they proposing, and what happens if the API vendor changes terms?
- Who owns the source code and the server credentials?
- How are secrets, withdrawals and audit logs handled?
- Can they show a working portal demo, not just a design file?
- How do they handle MT4 vs MT5 differences, and who maintains the integration after launch?
- Is the scope fixed with milestones and a written list of what is excluded?

Frequently asked questions
How do I connect a website to MT5?
You choose one of three routes: embed the WebTerminal, use a vendor JSON/REST wrapper, or build a custom bridge on the Manager API. Your server provider must grant API access. Keep credentials server-side and test on a demo server before touching live accounts.
Can I embed the MetaTrader web terminal on my website?
Yes, as an iframe embed, but it is tied to a specific broker's access server, usually needs HTTPS, and your site cannot read the trader's login data. It suits trading and demo access, not a full trader's room with account data.
What is the difference between MT4 and MT5 for brokers?
MT4 (2005) supports hedging only; MT5 (2010) supports hedging and netting and more asset classes. MQL4 and MQL5 are not compatible, so integrations are separate builds. Brokeree's analysis found about 68% of over 900 brokerages offer MT5 and 40% offer MT4.
Is MT4 still available for new brokers?
Sources conflict. Reports since 2018 say MetaQuotes stopped selling MT4 licences to new customers, making MT5 the practical option. Terms can change, so confirm with MetaQuotes or your provider before planning a launch around MT4.
What is the MT5 Manager API used for?
It lets licensed broker-side software manage the server: creating accounts, running balance operations, changing groups, resetting passwords and reading trades and history. Access is permissioned by MetaQuotes or your provider, so check current terms before designing a portal around it.
Is forex broker business legal in India?
Retail forex for Indian residents is tightly restricted under RBI and FEMA, and currency derivatives are generally limited to recognised Indian exchanges. This is general information, not legal advice; consult a lawyer first. Brandzivio builds software only and the client handles compliance.
