This page is for founders, sports media brands, cricket communities and marketing teams who are shortlisting a fantasy cricket app development company in India. By the end you will know which formats can still be built, what features and data feeds the app needs, what the market says about cost, and which questions to ask a vendor before you sign.
Most older articles on this topic were written for paid-contest apps and ignore the law that changed in 2025. We start with the legal position because it decides everything else: the format, the revenue model and the budget. Everything here is general information checked on 19 October 2026, not legal advice.

What does a fantasy cricket app development company build?
In fantasy cricket, a user picks a virtual XI from real players in a real match. The user's points come from what those players actually do on the field: runs, wickets, catches and similar events. A development company builds the software that makes this work, from the screen the user taps to the back-office the operator controls.
The usual parts are a user app (Android, iOS or web), a match and contest engine, a points engine that turns match events into scores, a leaderboard, an admin panel and push notifications. The points engine depends on a live score and ball-by-ball data feed from a cricket data provider, which we cover below.
This page suits media brands, communities, startups and brands that want a fan-engagement app. It does not suit anyone planning cash-prize contests in India, which the law now prohibits. If you already know your format, see our gaming website development service at /services/gaming-website-development or go straight to /contact.
Is fantasy cricket legal in India after the 2025 Act?
The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 passed the Lok Sabha on 20 August 2025 and the Rajya Sabha on 21 August 2025 (PRS India). The Online Gaming Rules, 2026 were notified on 22 April 2026, and the Act and Rules came into force on 1 May 2026 (Sansa Legal, 2026). The Act also creates the Online Gaming Authority of India (OGAI) as the regulator.
The key idea is the online money game: a game where a user pays money or other stakes expecting monetary or other enrichment, whether the outcome depends on skill, chance or both (PRS India, 2025). Because skill is no longer a defence, a paid-entry fantasy contest with cash winnings falls on the wrong side of the line. Offering such games can attract up to 3 years' imprisonment and a fine up to Rs 1 crore, and advertising them up to 2 years and Rs 50 lakh (PRS India, 2025).
An online social game, by contrast, is offered solely for recreation, entertainment or skill development, with at most a subscription or access fee and no stakes. That is the space where a lawful fantasy cricket app sits. Sources differ on whether free social games must register with OGAI, so confirm this with counsel. Constitutional challenges are reported to be pending in the Supreme Court; we have not predicted the outcome, so confirm the current status before you launch.
Brandzivio builds software only. The client is responsible for licences and legal compliance, and nobody should expect promised returns or winnings from any game. This is not legal advice; ask a qualified lawyer. For the full legal walk-through, read our guide to real money games and the 2025 Act at /solutions/real-money-game-development-company.
Which fantasy cricket formats can you build today?
The table compares common formats on the same four points. Treat it as a map for your discussion with a lawyer, not as approval of any design.
| Format | How users take part | Money flows in or out of contests? | Position in India (checked 19 Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paid-entry, cash-prize fantasy | User pays an entry fee to join a contest and wins cash | Yes, in and out | Prohibited as an online money game since 1 May 2026 |
| Free-to-play fantasy | User joins with no entry fee and no cash payout | No | Falls closest to an online social game; confirm registration and prize design with counsel |
| Private friends or community leagues | Invite-code leagues played for points and bragging rights | No | Falls closest to an online social game; confirm with counsel |
| Sponsor-funded brand contest | A brand sponsors a free league and rewards | No entry stake, sponsor pays | Depends on the prize design; take written legal advice |
Which features does a fantasy cricket app need?
Think in must-have and nice-to-have layers so the first release stays focused. A wallet is needed only for lawful features such as in-app points; it is not about cash deposits and withdrawals for contests in India.
- Must have: sign-up with OTP, match schedule, a team builder with a credit or point cap, and captain and vice-captain multipliers.
- Must have: contests and leagues, live points, a leaderboard and push notifications for toss, playing XI and results.
- Must have: an admin panel to control matches, players and points, with audit logs for every change.
- Should have: private leagues with invite codes, player stats and form guides, and Hindi and English language options.
- Could have: ball-by-ball commentary, score prediction, live polls and social sharing.
- Later: extra sports, deeper analytics and sponsor placements once match-day traffic is stable.
- Brandzivio's gaming service covers a game lobby, user accounts, leaderboards and rewards, a secure real-time engine on WebSockets, an admin panel and reporting, and anti-fraud and audit logs.
How do live scores and player points work?
Fantasy points depend on a licensed cricket data feed. The app pulls fixtures, squads, the playing XI, ball-by-ball scoring and fantasy points over REST or WebSocket connections. Providers you can evaluate, listed in no order of preference, include Entity Sport (a Cricket API with a Fantasy API), Sportradar, Roanuz, Sportmonks, Goalserve and CricketData.
Compare them on how early the playing XI arrives, update latency, fantasy-specific endpoints, coverage of the IPL and international fixtures, licence terms for commercial use and the recurring monthly fee. Ask who holds the licence: you or your developer.
Scoring disputes are common. Providers correct data after the match, and super overs and rain-reduced games change how points are counted. The admin panel should therefore let staff re-run points with an audit trail showing who changed what and why.
Traffic is spiky. Users flood in at the toss and again in the last overs, so a real-time architecture with caching, for example Redis, matters more than a polished first screen. Load-test before a big fixture, not after.
How much does a fantasy cricket app cost and how long does it take?
Published vendor estimates (OnGraph, 2025) put a basic fantasy sports app at about $20,000 to $40,000, a medium one at $40,000 to $80,000 and an advanced one at $80,000 to $150,000 or more, with timelines of roughly 2 to 3, 4 to 6 and 6 to 9 months. These are market ranges in US dollars, not Brandzivio quotes, and they were written for the paid-contest era. They are wide because vendor blogs rarely say what is included.
For Brandzivio's gaming website development service, the indicative range in our service facts is Rs 2,00,000 - Rs 12,00,000, with a timeline of 6 - 16 weeks. Both depend on scope and are indicative, not a fixed quote. The two sets of figures are not directly comparable, so use the market range only to sense the spread.
Recurring costs are the ones most pages skip: the data feed fee, cloud hosting sized for match-day spikes, SMS or OTP charges, app store accounts and legal advice.
| Cost driver | Why it moves the price |
|---|---|
| Platforms (Android, iOS, web) | Each platform adds design, build and testing effort |
| Cricket data feed licence | A recurring fee that varies with coverage, latency and commercial terms |
| Custom vs white-label | White-label is quicker to start; custom costs more but gives control of the roadmap |
| Number of sports and leagues | More formats mean more points rules and admin screens |
| Admin depth | Points re-runs, audit logs and reports take more build time |
| Load testing and hosting | Match-day spikes need capacity and testing beyond a normal app |
How do you choose a fantasy cricket app development company?
This is general buyer advice that applies to any vendor, including us. Use it as a checklist when you compare quotes.
- Which format is the quote for, and has your own lawyer reviewed it?
- Which data feed will be used, and whose name is on the licence?
- Who owns the source code and the user data? Agree this in writing.
- How is match-day load tested, and how are points corrections handled?
- What are the support and maintenance terms after launch?
- Can you see a working demo and speak to a past client?
- White-label vs custom: white-label is quicker and cheaper but limits changes and may carry a licence fee; custom costs more, but you control the roadmap.
- Red flags: guaranteed users or income, a 'Dream11 clone with cash contests' pitch after May 2026, no mention of the Act, no reference clients, or a fixed price with no scope document.
How do free fantasy cricket apps make money?
Without entry fees, revenue comes from other routes. Dream11 was reported to have moved to a free-to-play product funded by advertising and sponsorship in September 2025 (Manifest Media). Brand sponsorship, sponsored leagues and advertising are the most common lawful routes. Premium cosmetic or subscription features can also work if they are not stakes, but check the design with counsel. Audience data may be used only with proper consent under the DPDP Act.
Be careful with promotion: the Act also restricts advertising of money games, so your copy must never suggest winnings. That same Manifest Media report mentions cash prizes for free play; we do not treat that as allowed, and any prize structure needs legal advice. No revenue or user numbers can be promised. What you can plan for is engagement: matchdays and IPL season peaks bring traffic, and private leagues help bring users back.

Frequently asked questions
Is fantasy cricket legal in India now?
Paid-entry fantasy contests with cash winnings are prohibited as online money games under the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025, in force since 1 May 2026. Free formats without stakes are treated differently. This is general information checked on 19 October 2026, not legal advice; confirm with a lawyer.
Can I build a free-to-play fantasy cricket app in India?
A free-to-play app with no entry fee and no cash payout falls closest to an online social game under the Act. Registration requirements and any prize design should be confirmed with counsel. Brandzivio builds the software only; the client is responsible for licences and compliance.
How much does it cost to develop a fantasy cricket app?
Published vendor estimates (OnGraph, 2025) range from about $20,000 to $150,000 or more, depending on features. Brandzivio's indicative range for its gaming service is Rs 2,00,000 - Rs 12,00,000, depending on scope. Add recurring costs such as the data feed, hosting and OTP charges.
How long does it take to build a fantasy cricket app?
Vendor estimates from 2025 suggest roughly 2 to 9 months, from a basic to an advanced app. Brandzivio's indicative timeline for its gaming service is 6 - 16 weeks, depending on scope. Data feed integration and match-day load testing are the steps most often underestimated.
Which cricket API is used for fantasy cricket live scores?
Apps use a licensed cricket data feed. Options to evaluate include Entity Sport, Sportradar, Roanuz, Sportmonks, Goalserve and CricketData. Compare playing XI timing, latency, fantasy endpoints, IPL coverage, commercial licence terms and the monthly fee. We do not rank them.
How do free fantasy cricket apps make money?
Mainly through brand sponsorship, sponsored leagues and advertising, as Dream11 was reported to do after its September 2025 move to free-to-play (Manifest Media). Other models need legal review, and any consented use of data must follow the DPDP Act. No revenue is guaranteed.
